5 easy tips to be confident on-camera
Being interviewed can be really stressful - but it doesn’t have to be. I have done media training for thousands of people to be on TV for live and pre-recorded appearances, at Inside Edition and Fox. Here are some tips from my 15 years of experience and science (ohhh science). These on-camera media tips can be applied to filming your own social media videos as well.
1) PREPARE
If you prepare enough for a media appearance, you will feel less nervous. The day or two before (not the day of!!), work on your messaging and craft bullet points or soundbites but don’t ‘MEMORIZE IT’ word for word. To avoid a robotic delivery, make sure your overall pitch or message can roll off your tongue but allow for conversation.
2) READ YOUR OWN RESUME
Remind yourself of how awesome you are and that you are in this position because of your successes. This will remind you this is a conversation between peers and not a pressured situation.
3) BREATHE
Right before going on camera, breathe. Yes, I realize we all breathe (we need to in order to stay alive!) but breathe in and out slowly while counting to ten. This will physiologically calm your body down.
4) SHAKE IT UP
Lastly, shake up your body (just a little, don't get sweaty!). This sends positive energy into your body and loosens you up. Also - try to talk to someone right before you start recording, your vocal chords will then be warmed up!
5) SMILE
Smile the second before you start. A smile changes your brain chemistry, the sound of your speech and it’ll start the interview off with a positive energy.
I offer workshops on media training and messaging - I help people get prepared for on-camera interviews - TV interviews, podcast interviews and presentations.
