HOW TO GET CLIENTS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA (NOT JUST FOLLOWERS!)

Harnessing social media to promote and grow your business can be a complete game changer. Here are easy to apply tips on how to leverage social media to find your target client, grow your leads, bring in business and increase sales.

Let’s be real, none of us are trying to be prom king/queen/royalty… most of us are using social media to promote our businesses! I advise clients on how to leverage social media video, blogs and podcasts to find their ideal clients, be seen as a thought leader and grow their business.

I’ve executive produced video and podcast content for organizations, brands and professionals, ranging from real estate agents, lawyers and brands of all sizes and industries including PEOPLE Magazine and the nonprofit It Gets Better. I also conduct on-camera media coaching classes for professionals, CEO’s and even members of Congress and have been recently featured in Business Insider. I love helping small business grow by helping them decide what to make — and making it!

I recently spoke with Instagram expert Kar Brulhart, who has worked with Michael Kors, Google, the U.N. and others, and our conversation was full of gems about growing your business with social media and social video. Some takeaways from both of us:

DON’T ‘POST AND GHOST’

  • Engagement is key for social media platforms - do not post and then disappear!

  • You need to have reciprocity

  • Focus on building real relationships

HOW TO TURN SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWERS INTO NEWSLETTER SIGNUPS AND EVENTUALLY CLIENTS

  • Interact casually at first in a direct message

  • Eventually get this follower a free download

  • Welcome every new follower with something personal - specific to them and personal info about you

VARY YOUR CONTENT

  • Mix up your content - include video, carousels, quotes and single image posts

  • Track your analytics to see how specific types of posts are performing in terms of shares and follows - not just likes!

TURN P.R. MOMENTS INTO LONG-LASTING CONTENT

  • Earned media is awesome! Just because the moment passed doesn’t mean you can’t keep re-using it!

  • Feature that press moment on your blog, in a newsletter and on social media in more than just the straight forward way and at various times

  • Tell that story in an emotional way “show a photo or a video with your reaction to when you got that piece of press. Start with a video of your daughters playing and you write some inspirational caption and then you go fast forward into that media feature where you know you're on TV.”

Live Video of Digital Content Strategist Kim Rittberg Interviewing Instagram Expert Kar Brulhart about growing your business through social media, gaining clients and increasing your revenue.

Instagram Reel Video example of how to use podcast audio to create a compelling social media video. Process: I took audio from my podcast interview with Gretchen Rubin. I then filmed footage of me applying her advice. I laid that audio under footage I filmed of me following her advice. This reel had a 25x engagement rate. Instagram’s algorithm favors users who use more of their functions - in this video this case, I used their audio, I added in multiple clips, I also added in multiple texts.

Q & A ON WHAT TO POST:

Kim Rittberg: Do you still recommend postings, carousel and static images? Every headline you see is everything is short form video reels gets you so much more visibility and engagement. So where do you see static and everyone here knows what static post is but you know, a photo or a quote or a carousel post. Where do you see that fitting in? How is that beneficial within it?

Kar Brulhart: Yeah, so I have not changed my response to this question. You have to have a mix of content. So video is king in terms of reach distribution and what Instagram and TikTok are really pushing. That being said, we are seeing again that single images in carousel posts are getting pushed out again. I'm seeing tons of saves, shares, follows coming in from these static images more so than on reels and so are my clients. So think about mixing up your content and going into your analytics, looking at the posts that performed really well for you, putting those ideally into a template. So a template could be a graphic, like a pie chart, a list. They’ve been doing really well in terms of saves and getting people to hit that follow button.

Q & A ON TURNING A PODCAST INTO OTHER CONTENT:

Kim: What I think is so important about podcasts and Instagram is that podcasts can become a hero content through which you then trickle down other content. By hero, I main a main piece of content through which other content comes from. So you spend a while making a half an hour an hour podcast, you can take from that hour three different Instagram reels ideas. You can make two different quote posts. You can put those on LinkedIn in a different format. That's a great thing. So efficient!  Instagram Doesn't necessarily push listeners to the podcast to listen but it creates awareness. Plus 90% of people who make podcasts are trying to grow their business. So even if it doesn't directly translate to a podcast listen, it can grow your audience on Instagram, it's growing your community on social media.

Kar Brulhart: And you can take sound bites from your podcast and then put it on as original audio on top of just a video that's sped up - a time lapse. You hear yourself on a podcast and think ‘I'm really knowledgeable!’ So then you could take that and do like a really inspirational, aspirational something, and use the soundbite in the background of their video.
