Why You Should Brag Like Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift recently showed off her success boldly during her Eras tour… and you know what–so should you! For years I’d blush when my mom stood next to me and bragged about me to strangers. But now that I’m not a self-conscious, awkward teenager, I realize how lucky I was to have an invested, pro-bono publicist by my side.

Whether you’re working at a company or you’re a business owner or entrepreneur, in this quick bite-sized bonus solo episode you will learn:

  • How I was underestimated in a memorable moment at work that taught me to show up with swagger

  • How I realized I needed to start bragging

  • Why you need to brag especially if you’re trying to get clients or press for your business

  • What the behind the scenes of being a TV News producer looks like and how it should impact how YOU show up when you pitch yourself to the press

I’m Kim Rittberg and I teach business owners and professionals how to grow their incomes, leads & credibility with video and podcasts and how to be better on camera. And I make it fun! I’ve won awards for my video work, I launched Us Weekly’s video unit, was a TV news producer for a decade and was a video marketing executive at Netflix & PopSugar.

Kim Rittberg (00:00):

I just got back from speaking engagements around the country, basically a dream of mine. The dream is finally coming true because I started showing up on camera marketing myself, putting myself out there, but it took me a long time to fight through the insecurity and the self-consciousness and the fears. So I wanted to share with you what I've learned from my own experiences and how finally getting the confidence to put myself out there has completely changed my career and my life. So whether you're running your own business or you're trying to be more confident in meetings or in interviews, I really want to share my experiences in this lovely little solo episode today on how you can go from Shai to Shine. I've been having all of these amazing realizations and lessons from my professional life. I've been doing a lot of speaking engagements lately, and I was like, I really want to bring this to Mom's Exit interview.

(00:51):

So I'm doing a quick, special solo episode about being on camera and basically hiding from the camera means hiding from clients means hiding from your own success. So I'm going to talk today about going from camera shy to camera shine. And while it sounds like I'm only talking about being on camera, being on social media, I also mean regardless of your career showing up with confidence in public speaking, in presentations and on camera. Basically, when I left corporate, I was in media for 15 years. I was a TV producer for 10 years. I launched the digital video unit for US weekly. I was a video marketing executive for Netflix and Pop Sugar. Basically, I hit a great 15 year corporate career. And when I decided to work for myself after working in the delivery room with my second child, I realized I do like what I do.

(01:41):

I love having a creative career helping other people grow with video, teaching people how to be better on camera. But I wanted to do it for myself. But as I launched my business, I realized, Ooh, I need to market myself. I had to start showing up on camera, and I've really felt all of these negative voices in my head. I had a lot of just self-consciousness and all of those self-limiting beliefs that so many of my now clients have, so many of my group coaching students have. And so I really wanted to talk about that. Recently, I spoke at the Berkshire Hathaway Home Services National Sales Convention. It was unbelievable. I went to Las Vegas to speak to hundreds and hundreds of real estate agents from across the country. And one of my sessions was going from camera shy to camera shine. And obviously for these real estate agents, it's very specific to your business, but this is for a lot of business owners.

(02:36):

It's for a lot of professionals. And even if you're not running your own business and you're in corporate, being able to show up confidently on camera and in meetings is a complete career changer. And today I just want to talk a little bit about how to break through that. And my number one thing is really the mindset piece of it. So I am not a huge self-help person. I'm a huge mindset person. I have seen a therapist on and off for many, many years, and I credit so much of my contentness and my happiness from that, just the ability to really look at your life objectively and say, I'm happy about this. I express gratitude for the things I have and the things that I want. Be more conscious and intentional about going for them. And so when I started running my own business, I realized I was not showing up on camera and I started to realize I have my own business.

(03:26):

And if I'm letting this self-consciousness or my imagined my perceived negative voices of people judging me, of people thinking I'm silly, of people thinking I'm narcissistic, of people thinking I'm desperate to impact me, it's only going to hurt my business and my business. I created my business because it's what I want for my life. I get to see my kids more. I get to be more in control of my career and control of my schedule. And so I realized I better start showing up on camera, but I had all those negative voices. I feel awkward on camera. Oh, does anyone want to hear from me? Those people are going to judge me. And it took me a while, but I realized I am talking to my ideal client when I'm showing up on camera. I'm not thinking about the one girl in college who didn't like me.

(04:20):

I'm not thinking about that colleague who was competitive and tried to backs stab me. That's not who I'm talking to. Might they be seeing my content? Sure. Might they be thinking I'm silly and narcissistic. All right, whatever the truth is, I'm only talking to my ideal clients. And what's happened since I started showing up on video and on podcast, I have quadrupled four times my inbound leads. I'm showing up on video on my own social media. I'm also obviously hosting this podcast. I'm showing up on other people's podcasts, and I'm getting leads all the time on LinkedIn, on Instagram from my ideal clients. They want to see how I can help them be on camera. They want to see how I can help them grow their business with video. That's my business. Obviously. I help business owners, real estate agents grow with video, coming up with great strategy that stands out without burnout.

(05:08):

But I've gotten, I've tripled my speaking engagements. I had one video, one live social media video that brought me three clients immediately. So obviously this hasn't happened overnight. It's been months and months and a few years, but it took me a year to greenlight this podcast. That's pretty unbelievable considering I'm a video executive producer, I'm a podcast executive producer, meaning big companies pay me a lot of money to make podcasts. Why would it take me a year to launch my own podcast? Well, it's those self-limiting beliefs. It's the who wants to hear me? Am I really worth speaking out and sharing my perspective? Do people want to hear from me? And so I did a lot of thought and work and figuring like, no, I want to say something. I believe in Mom's exit interview, and I'm glad I do. So many of you write me messages on how much this show is helping you grow and helping you rethink your choices and rethink your careers.

(06:10):

So obviously, I'm so glad I broke through the mindset issues, the negativity in my own own head about showing up on camera. And I share this because I know my resume is great. I know I worked my butt off for 15 years, but someone like me still feels those things. I still feel those things. I worked in tv. I, I'm like a very executive, very experienced media executive, and I still felt that negativity and that fear to make a podcast to show up on social videos. So I feel you. I'm with you. I'm one of you. But I am also here to say it's worth to breakthrough. I had such imposter syndrome about being a business owner, and you know what I have now, I'm contributing to Fast Company Magazine. That is all because I'm showing up. That's all because I'm putting myself out there.

(06:57):

So I just wanted to really share that with you because it was a real mindset shift for me, and that's something I've been speaking about at the speaking engagements. And today I just wanted to help you a little bit with that mindset shift in terms of showing up. And basically my major lesson for this like mini solo episode. And I would love to hear from you. Message me if you like this mini episode, if you want to hear more of these. My biggest tip to break through and both being comfortable on camera if you're a business owner to grow your business, but also being comfortable speaking in presentations, speaking amongst your colleagues, presenting yourself as a person who's deserving of a stage. One of the biggest tips I have that I spoke that I used at these speaking engagements is getting out of supermodel mode and getting into teacher mode.

(07:49):

Supermodel mode is when we're standing there and we're thinking about all the people watching us, how does my hair look? How does my voice look? How's my outfit? We have to step away from that supermodel mode, and we have to step into teacher mode. We have to think about who we are teaching, who we are, empowering, what is the message we are delivering, whether that's in a conference room on a Zoom call or on camera for social media. Think more about your message and less about you and yourself and who's judging you, because also people aren't judging you. They'll probably think about what they're ordering for dinner. So I just really wanted to share that with you. It's been a really big incredible month for me. I had those two huge speaking engagements. One was in Las Vegas for the National Sales Convention of Real Estate Agents, and another one was in Orlando, Florida for the Women's Real Estate Investment Summit. So anyway, I wouldn't have had any of those opportunities if I didn't start showing up. So I really wanted to share that with you. You guys are the best. You're the best listeners. You send the best feedback. So let me know what you thought about this episode and what you want me to talk about next. And if you're
