1 Quick Tip to Be a Better Public Speaker from my training of the fortune magazine staff

I had the honor of conducting public speaking training for the staff of Fortune Magazine. We focused specifically on public speaking and moderating panels in advance of their summits: Fortune Most Powerful Women, COO Summit, & Fortune Impact Initiative.

We focused on presentation skills, pre-speaking body & mind preparation, handling nerves and confidence.

But there was one lesson that I taught the speakers and have previous used in other public speaking training session that really resonated:

“Bring Dinner Party Energy.”

What does it mean? When you are on a stage or when you are speaking in a meeting or recording a video for social media marketing, bringing ‘dinner party energy’ means presenting yourself with a slightly elevated energy, being welcoming, both with your words, voice and smile. Think of how you speak when you are welcoming someone into your home at a dinner party.

As the moderator of a panel, keynote speaker or as an expert on a social media video, your energy is contagious. Therefore, if you bring low energy, or you don’t seem enthusiastic to be there, guess what? You will find a crowd of people scrolling on their phone or zoning out. If you’re making content for social media, you will find less views and less engagement.

This does not mean to be inauthentic or overly excited if that’s not your personality, however, it’s important to find the balance of enthusiasm and your own personal natural energy. In short - we all have our own ‘dinner party energy’ and you must bring that to public speaking!

I covered this topic in my podcast “The Exit Interview with Kim Rittberg”. Every Friday I cover a marketing topic in less than 5 minutes. On this episode entitled “1 Quick Tip to Be A Better Public Speaker” you will learn:
