3 Things I Learned From Speaking At Fast Company’s Innovation Festival

Fresh off speaking at the Fast Company Innovation Festival to hundreds of business people in New York City, here are some lessons I learned and want to share:

In this special mini solo episode, I discuss:

  • How to prepare

  • How to manage your energy for a large vent

  • How to plan for marketing after the event

3 Things I Learned From Speaking At Fast Company’s Innovation Festival

1- You can never be too prepared

I always prepare my speech and then do run-throughs. This is important for both public speaking and on-camera content. I have also done live TV interviews. Having a live audience or a camera in front of you will feel different, so it’s important to practice in the same manner as the real setting.

2 - Always capture content

Even if there is a photographer at an event, whether you’re talking to 5 people or 500 - plan to capture content. You are putting in the time and effort to showcase your expertise, make sure you capture marketing materials that can help you later to get more bookings.

3 - Manage your energy before and after - try not to book meetings the next day!

If you have a big event or speech, you will feel emotionally drained. If it also includes networking, factor that in. Try to have the next day be a ‘down day’ or a ‘no-meetings day.’

In my 20’s every single winter I would wear myself down from burning the candle at both ends. It's important to manage your energy and your health.

Bonus learnings: I use my personal work situations to teach my children about doing big things that scare you and about preparing! My 6 year old son reassured me to not be nervous before my speech. He said "Mommy, you spoke to 300 people and this is only 150!”

I came home to hand written signs saying congratulations taped to our door.
